Zaghlool rewards loyalty. We are fortunate in battle. Our enemies are near defeat.

Zaghlool the Promise Keeper gives us a new weapon in our cause. Zaghlool is mighty and we prevail. Zaghlool created the Oynbokigon from his own blood. With it the great struggle is won. We ally with Fendamarghira else we crush Nabatukum with the Oynbokigon. We will begin moving it to attack position immediately.

Victory is Ours.

Zaghlool will reign on the thousand worlds. Zaghlool is mighty.

Zaghlool rewards loyalty. We are fortunate in battle. Our enemies are near defeat. The humans of Nabatukum are divided within and succumb to Fendamarghira – a prince of Lettratitus – one of our greatest allies. Fendamarghira now holds the city and is strengthened by its despair. We remind him of our alliance with Lettratitus. We turn Fendamarghira to our influence. He joins our cause. The population of Nabatukum and their suffering strengthen our goals – Zaghlool will reign on the thousand worlds. Zaghlool is mighty.

Zaghlool rewards loyalty. We are fortunate in battle. Our enemies are near defeat. The resistance movement continues to cause some light casualties and minor disturbances. These may cause slight disruptions to our efforts but for Zaghlool and his faithful, there can be only victory.

Commander Kudrighira, Sergeant Bolokaghira, and subordinates failed Zaghlool and his loyal servants in their efforts. They improperly equipped and defended a pay shipment destined for Durungu mercenaries and the fighting forces of Ost’Batum. This failure was not overlooked by Zaghlool and we are made free of their burden. Their failure resulted in minor revolts by Durungu troops and precipitated their treacherous and treasonous abandonment of our cause. Loyal and faithful troops of the pureblood were successful at completely suppressing the Durungu disturbance. Notable success was achieved by Lieutenant Batukanghira who, by his own hand, slew more than 28 of the traitors. Zaghlool took note of his faith. He was rewarded. Some traitorous Durungu elements were able to defect to Nabatakum’s aid. Zaghlool will not forget their treachery. Their agony shall soon fuel our efforts.

You are fortunate! Zaghlool rewards loyalty!

Zaghlool gives you the opportunity to surpass expectations. Your request for additional forces has been honorably noted and recorded. Providence provides that your task is especially honorable – it has been recorded. Though your task is vital, the main body of our forces is required at Ost’Batum. You will succeed with what you are given – honor shall be yours. You shall be rewarded. Zaghlool has chosen you for this test.

Ned’s Encounter with the Blue Wizards and the Library of Ul’Batum.

The club-footed-man, aka Cosima Nar Vasilna, aka Feudas Vasilna, aka Cosima, was quite reluctant regarding the idea of sharing The Library with you. Later in the conversation, however, something flashed across his face and he had warmed to the notion. However, there was one stipulation. The Access was available only with his aid, through instant passage.  The location must always remain secret. You were under strict orders to stay within the chamber into which you were transported. That being said, Cosima did promise access to historical volumes that might be of assistance to you.

When you arrived, Fowles was there. In fact, it was he who facilitated your instant passage into the chamber. He was obviously quite uncomfortable to be seeing you again. In the meanwhile, he was able to assist you in finding your way around the hall of records in his official capacity as Keeper of Volumes. The chamber itself is quite vast. It is circular in design, with a great domed ceiling above, a great open space below. Around the perimeter, there are two levels of radiating bookshelves. The whole is overfull, with scrolls and volumes spilling off of shelves and piled in corners and littered across tables below the great dome.  It appears the library is little used. Things are dusty and yellowed, and volumes and works all seem rather dated…

Fowles informed you that there were no spellbooks available in this chamber. However, there were several noteworthy tidbits that you were able to track down.

From the Codex Anathema by Iphegor of the Ebon Mirror:

“the distant place from the planes between is completely subjugated by a primal entity known as the tyranny of the eye…this creature has no name to members of its race, only known as the Great Mother to others” … “her offspring, the Eye Tyrants, are more diverse than the many dimensions they have dispersed across. The only traits they have in common is their terrible malevolence, and their great central eye – beyond that many have lesser or greater limbs, or perhaps even other eye-bearing appendages.”… “Many Tyrants possess the ability to suppress magic, according to their will, and also to wield great magics to rival the most powerful of sorcerers”

“Very rarely a Tyrant exhibits amazing longevity and becomes known as an Elder Orb. The source of the longevity is unknown but it is believed that they embody the primal purity of the Great Mother. An Elder Orb is effectively immortal; it never grows senile or infirm, instead only gaining in power, wisdom, and knowledge as to become perhaps the worst of all possible adversaries.”

From a scroll fragment titled “Eleya’s Fall”:

“She loved the wild things more than man and nothing she had yet known was so wild as the Outsider. Eleya was swept away by its wild way, and beguiled by its foreign nature, for her innocence and purity did not allow her to know its truest form. But Joronen saw its true shape and knew it. He beseeched upon his sister to beware the Outsider.

But, Eleya was blind in her love and gave her heart to the Outsider, who coveted it and held it precious for his own in his deep place. Thus passed Eleya. Her heart was lost to the world of men and so began the long darkness.

According to the sacred writings, Joronen’s rage knew no bounds and he wrought his wrath on Zaghlool and his children. One of the sons was slain, and another driven into hiding with grievous wounds along with many lesser children.

It was much later that the Outsider became known by his Tanarii name, Zaghlool, or Father, for he was Lord of the Tanarii.”

Fragments from the Travels of Tauden Kabale

“Our ship was broken on the north shore of Samadhi Bay. We headed west on foot over the Kathivargi-Magh (Kathivargh Mountains) toward home. Many of our men did not survive the high pass but we came down in the land called Mogadore and found it to be a rainy land inhabited by a fair-skinned folk who call themselves Sylarian, or “people of the wood. There are valleys of deep soft forests and the highlands are fresh and covered with sweeping grasslands and flowering meadows.”

“We fought a battle alongside them against their enemies, a dark-skinned race inhabiting the hills descending toward the distant sea. The dark-skinned warriors worshipped a dark god with a spider-like visage they call Marghul-Toa.”

“The Sylarian people are crafters of great renown and they worked in concert with the Child of Iowe to build his monument upon the hill – crafting such structures as was their custom of grand and beautiful proportions – and inscribing his tale on plates of the white gold with which the temple was adorned.”

Return to Dun Alden – Handout (10/26/17)

We return.

Deep darkness looms over Na’Batum. It hangs over tiled rooftops, drifts along the canals and creeps down cobbled walks.

The great sphere of the Oynbokigon, the five hundred foot orb of guttering, crackling darkness leans where it fell against the shattered Tower of the Tullabard and slowly settles into the sacred waters of Ul’Batum. It roars with silent lightless flames, looming monstrously behind the white tower. A pale green miasma of smoke or steam or death itself cascades down from the great sphere. Traces and tendrils of the green gas sink down and through the rubble choked Gates of Justice – the broad arch leading into the royal precinct of Ul’Batum. The gates remain open although the tall spire of the Tower of Truth lies shattered and strewn across the stone stairs before them. Pale green wisps trail down the steps, over rubble and across scattered corpses. The drifting death floats across the Grand Canal and licks at the plaza containing the now shrouded statue of Joronen.

Around you, the poor people of Na’Batum stare with a rapt gaze. The weeks of hunger and suffering are apparent in their gaunt faces. All who remain near the great central plaza of the Grand Canal are beyond fear and many cower, well beyond madness. They have seen things unthinkable – and still the sphere looms like a dark light over everything – weighing and crushing and thinning all around it.

The crowded canals and dense buildings of Na’Batum seem more faded, more fragile, and more set upon by the dark weight of Zaghlool than ever. As you look around and account for yourselves, you realize that your companions were changed by the time they spent within the extra-dimensional space of the sphere and by your battle with the Shothragot, the Dark Harbinger of the Elder Evil, Zaghlool. Your own visage and equipment has been changed as well. It is as though you look at yourself, your companions, and your surroundings through a darkened mirror into an even more desperately grim painting of the reality you knew before.

Papers and pages flutter down like snow from the upper reaches of the shattered tower to fall upon the stairs and into the canal below. Above and behind, the surface of the great sphere convulses and boils with great blisters – growing and rupturing to reveal deep rents and cavities and the beginnings of its strange alien bone-like structure. From one huge blistering rupture, a dense clot of monstrous forms are excreted, squealing and bellowing, to fall together like giant excrement hundreds or more feet to the waters of Ul’Batum below.

The sound of the settling sphere and the silent flames is near deafening in the darkness. At the same time, the clear sound of a stone sliding and then tipping down a stair draws everyone’s attention to the foot of the tower and the great white portal. A shimmering sparkling glow appears in the darkness and then, emerging from the shadows and surrounded by a shielding light, a female figure claws her way through the rubble and through the gates. She is pale skinned with long black hair. She barely crawls. Dragging herself by her hands and arms alone, the remains of a torn diaphanous gown cling wetly to her bruised but nubile form. The jewel upon her neck burns brightly with a shielding radiance. She raises her head and peers out desperately across the plaza and into the still and watching eyes of Na’Batum.

Instantly and in a whirl of shadow, a lean bony figure in long blue cloaks, Fendamar the Wizard, is at her side crouching to grasp and support her. Her quiet voice breaks the roaring silence, “The queen… Queen Tulasamon…and the Crown Prince… the monsters are everywhere…can you save them?”

Fendamar turns to look at you…as does the gaze of the many deep set eyes of the crowd. Then everyone’s gaze turns to Arcturas, to the light shed by his helm and the glow of his breastplate – they watch as if waiting for something to happen. The thousands of hopeless watch for any sign of hope.
